The Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) is the
Union�s main instrument for the funding of research in Europe. It is a
multiannual framework programme setting out all Community research,
technological development and demonstration (RTD) activities.
The programe is structured around three headings, under which specific
activities will be undertaken:
I. Focusing and integrating Community research;
1. Life sciences, genomics and biotechnology for health (Advanced genomics and
its applications for health, Combatting major diseases)
2. Information Society technologies
3. Nanotechnologies and nano-sciences, knowledge-based multifunctional materials
and new production processes and devices
4. Aeronautics and space
5. Food quality and safety
6. Sustainable development, global change and ecosystems (Sustainable energy
systems, Sustainable surface transport, Global change and ecosystems)
7. Citizens and governance in a knowledge-based society
8. Specific activities covering a wider field of research
II. Structuring the European Research Area;
1. Research and innovation
2. Human resources
3. Research infrastructures
4. Science and society
III. Strenghtening the foundations of the European Research Area
1. Support for the coordination of
activities
2. Coherent development of research
and innovation policies
The Euratom framework programe will be financing activities directed towards:
1. Management of radioactive waste
2. Controlled thermonuclear fusion
3. Radiation protection
4. Other activities
5. Activities of the Joint Research Centre
Time span: 2002 - 2006
Proposals have to be submitted to the European Commission by the main partner(s)
in response to an official call for proposals or call for tenders from the
Commission.

General Information :
The European Commission has published six calls for proposals for specific
support actions for associated candidate countries. The calls relate to a number
of thematic priority areas under the 'integrating and strengthening the European
Research Area' specific programme.
The one general call begins a selection process for one or more entities from
each associated candidate country to:
- network National Contact Points (NCPs) ;
- undertake individual actions for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) ;
- network high quality centres of research;
- organise information events.
The total indicative budget for this call is nine million euro.
The five specific calls relate to the following thematic priority areas:
- nanotechnologies and nanosciences, knowledge-based multifunctional materials
and new production processes and devices;
- aeronautics and space;
- food quality and safety;
- sustainable development, global change and ecosystems: sustainable energy
systems;
- sustainable development, global change and ecosystems: sustainable surface
transport.
The calls address the organisation of conferences in the associated candidate
countries and the organisation of brokerage events and seminars.
The total indicative budget for these calls is four million euro, with a maximum
of one million euro for each priority thematic area.
