A training workshop for journalists from the countries of South-Eastern Europe,
to take place on
June 22 - 24, 2003
in Ohrid, Republic of Macedonia
Environment in the News is an event which aims to provide the participating
journalists with skills and techniques that could be used in their work. The
training workshop will aim to be of practical use to the journalists who attend.
In the course of training participants will be offered the opportunity to do
journalistic research on a hot environmental topic in Macedonia, and will be
expected to produce a draft story, to be discussed within the group and compared
to other journalists' stories. The training will be lead by Paul Brown,
environmental correspondent for The Guardian, and Pavel Antonov, editor of The
Bulletin of the Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe (REC).
The language of the Environment in the News training workshop will be English.
Participants will be expected to be able to communicate actively and do basic
work in English. Translation from and into English will not be provided.
Radio, television and press journalists from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina,
Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro, Macedonia and Kosovo who
cover environmental issues as part of their media work are invited to
participate in this training workshop. Interested journalists are kindly asked
to prepare an application consisting of a filled in application form (below) and
a professional resume illustrating their work achievements. Applications need to

The training will take place in the period June 22 - 24, 2003 in Ohrid, Republic
of Macedonia. Participants on the training are expected to arrive in Ohrid on
June 20 Friday, afternoon, and depart from Ohrid on June 25, Wednesday.
Successful applicants will be assisted to co-ordinate these dates with their
news desks and obtain absence permission.
News organisations are encouraged to cover partially or fully the per diem,
travel and accommodation costs of their nominated participants. In case this is
not possible the REC has the ability to cover partially or fully participants'
costs. Food and local travel will be arranged and fully covered by the REC as
well.
Filled application forms need to be received not later than 10 am on Wednesday,
May 21, 2003.
Successful applicants will be notified by June 6, 2003. The REC will provide
accepted participants with all necessary assistance for arranging the travel and
visa to Macedonia.

Summer school "Human Rights and Human Wrongs in Southeastern Europe"
August 25 - September 8, 2002 , Ohrid, Macedonia Application deadline: not available
The summer course will be taking place for second consecutive
year and is envisioned as a two-week modular course of lectures, workshop
discussions, case studies, and curriculum and project development exercises. A
general overview of the UN and the European human rights protection systems with
an extensive focus on issues of importance to South-eastern Europe (Dayton
Agreement, Kosovo Agreement, Stability Pact) will accompany the interactive
methods for learning about human rights. An analysis of the main human rights
protection instruments at place, their applicability, effect and implementation
in the South-eastern European context will be discussed and assessed. An
important accent of the course will be the introduction of innovative HR
teaching methodologies, role-plays and the development of common project ideas
by the course participants. The Summer School is supported by the European
Union, HESP Program of the Open Society Institute and the Austrian Ministry of
Foreign Affairs within the framework of the project Establishment and Networking
of Human Rights Centers in Former Yugoslav Republics.
