Teacher/Fellowships in Macedonian Studies
2003-2004
tenable at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies (University College
London) sponsored by a UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office Chevening Scholarship
and the School of Slavonic and East European Studies.
The purpose of the Teacher/Fellowship is to provide training and experience of
British university teaching, research, and administration through close
involvement, including job-shadowing, in the work of a leading British higher
education institution.
The Teacher/Fellowship will be awarded by the School of Slavonic and East
European Studies following open public competition in Macedonia. Shortlisting
will be carried out by staff at SSEES. The fellowship will run for ten months
from 1 September 2003 to 30 June 2004. The competition is open to all citizens
of Macedonia
irrespective of ethnicity.
The Teacher/Fellowship in Macedonian Studies is intended for a specialist in
history, politics, economics, sociology, linguistics, anthropology, ethnic and
minority studies, gender studies, or cultural studies. The Teacher/Fellow will
be attached to the SSEES Centre of South-East European Studies where s/he will
receive research supervision.
The Teacher/Fellow's teaching training and experience gathering programme will
consist of assisting with teaching for up to six hours in each week of the three
academic terms. The training in teaching may take the form of assisting with the
teaching of language or as part of established courses in an appropriate
discipline at BA or MA level. The teaching will take place either under the
supervision of the Manager of the SSEES Language Unit or of a qualified member
of the academic staff.
The Teacher/Fellow's administrative experience programme will be in one of the
following four areas: academic management (with particular reference to quality
assurance and control); institutional management (finance, personnel, estates);
editing of academic journals and books (with particular reference to refereeing
systems and in-house publishing); or library management of libraries using
state-of-the art technology. The administrative training will be delivered both
in University College and the School and can include personal mentoring,
attendance at policy-making meetings, hands-on experience, job-shadowing and
tailor-made overview sessions.
The Teacher/Fellow's command of English should be adequate to communicate orally
and in writing, and to participate in English in academic activities such as
research seminars and conferences. Experience in the teaching of Macedonian as a
second language is not essential but could be an advantage. The successful
candidate is likely to be already in an academic position. The Teacher/Fellow
will submit to his/her mentor a report and self-assessment of her/his year at
SSEES one week before the completion of the Teacher/Fellowship.
Applications for the Teacher/Fellowship should be made in two copies using the
attached form to arrive no later than Monday 10 March 2003. One set should be
sent to: The Director's Office, School of Slavonic and East European Studies,
University College London, Senate House, Malet Street, London WC1E 7HU; fax:

one-off book allowance of not less than £407.
