The International Crisis Group is seeking an intern to work for six months
supporting the Europe Program, with projects in the Balkans, the Caucasus and
Moldova. The internship is an entry level position and would suit a candidate
with a recent post graduate degree in political science, conflict studies or
public administration.
Responsibilities:
• Research on core conflict issues in the regions relevant to ICG programs at
the time;
• Providing assistance editing reports on conflict issues;
• Preparation of advocacy materials and attending meetings with/on behalf of the
ICG staff;
• Maintaining contact with governments, academic institutes, think-tanks, NGOs;
and
• Administrative work relative to the project and the office as a whole where
necessary.
Requirements:
• Post graduate degree in political science, conflict studies, public
administration or similar;
• An excellent verbal and written command of English - a good knowledge of
regional languages related to ICG projects desirable;
• Knowledge of the region and conflict issues; and
• Professional experience within an international relations environment/NGO,
desirable but not compulsory.

Internship Opportunity, Project on Security Sector Reform in SEE - Bulgaria,
Romania, Croatia, Serbia-Montenegro, Croatia, Albania and BiH
The Project on Security Sector Reform in South East Europe seeks interns
(unpaid) from - Bulgaria (Sofia), Romania (Bucharest), Croatia (Zagreb),
Serbia-Montenegro (Belgrade-Podgorica), Albania (Tirana) and BiH (Sarajevo).
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Supporting the Project Director in his interviews with the professionals,
experts and bureaucrats on security sector reform in the respective country; and
- Providing support to the Project Director in managing the project initiatives.
Applicants are expected to be university students or graduates, preferably with
interest on security studies. They should also have interest in interviewing.
Proficiency in English and the language of respective country is essential.
The deadline for submitting an application is December 1, 2003, Monday. The
internship cycle will begin on December 8, 2003, Monday and last until March 1,

Call for Intern Evaluation Project, Central, Eastern and Southeast
Europe
Fall-Winter 2003-2004
Minority Rights Group International (MRG) is a non-governmental
organisation working to secure the rights of ethnic, religious and
linguistic minorities and indigenous peoples worldwide, and to promote
cooperation and understanding between communities.
MRG's activities are focused on international advocacy, training,
publishing and outreach and are guided by the needs expressed by our
worldwide network of minority and indigenous partner organisations.
Presently, MRG is engaged in a comprehensive evaluation of its
programmes conducted in Central, Eastern and Southeast Europe in the
last decade. The ultimate goal of this evaluation is to enhance the
impact of MRG's and its local partners' work in Central, Eastern and
Southeast Europe through the assessment of the relevant programmes'
efficiency and effectiveness, accountability and impact.
MRG Budapest Co-ordination Office is currently accepting applications
for an intern to assist in implementation of this evaluation project.
The intern works as part of a small team based at MRG's Budapest office.
The internship will include the following tasks: research, analysis of
survey results, interviewing, organisation of and participation in
regional meetings, and general administrative tasks. It is expected that
the intern will work a minimum of 15 hours per week for up to six
months, depending on the availability of the selected applicant. The
intern will begin work on October 1, 2003. The internship will include
the opportunity to participate in MRG's Advocacy and Rights Training to
be held in November 2003 in Budapest, and the intern will attend the
presentation of evaluation project deliverables to take place in London
in Spring 2004; there may be further opportunities to travel.
The position is unpaid, but the intern will have the opportunity to
develop skills useful in a range of jobs within the NGO sector, and
he/she will also receive valuable experience in the field of minority
rights. It is envisaged that the internship will be very rewarding for a
committed individual.
Qualifications:
Essential:
- Educated to degree level
- Social research skills in both qualitative and quantitative
methodologies
Desirable
- Good knowledge of the region including recent economic, political and
social developments gained through work experience,travel in the region
or study
- Knowledge of basic human rights law and international mechanisms
- Knowledge of evaluation methods gained through training or experience
Abilities and Skills
Essential:
- Good communication skills, including good written and spoken English
- Good organisational/administrative skills
- Knowledge of Word for Windows, Excel and e-mail packages, and
fast/accurate typing
- Ability to use Internet as a research tool
- Ability to liaise with minority communities and international
organisations
- Confidentiality
Knowledge of Southeast European languages, in particular Bulgarian or
Macedonian, is strongly preferred.
