The end of the green line?
Nine days after the opening of the green line that has separated Turkish
(180,000 in the north) and Greek (620,000 in the south) Cypriots for nearly 30
years, 130,000 people have crossed the line that is supervised by UN forces.
This situation has broken the taboo of an impossible co-existence between the
two communities and brings hope for a solution to partition in the near future.
Negotiations
The leaders of the Greek and Turkish communities have renewed negotiations
with the aim to reunite the island.
The Commissioner for Enlargement, Günter Verheugen,
assured the Cypriot Foreign Minister that the island will be
included in the group of 10 countries requesting integration into
the European Union when a decision is taken in 2002 after the
European Council in Copenhagen.
More
Commenting on a report in "The Observer" about the purchase of
real estate at cut prices by the English in the Turkish part of
the island, Andreas Panayiotou the Home Secretary says that these
purchases are illegal and will be annulled since they have to be
approved by the Council of Ministers in the Greek administered
part of the island.
